Thank you, Elliott and Becca, for our Authentic Italian meal!

Becca and Elliott sent us ingredients for an authentic Italian meal. We created it last night.  We added our own fresh vegetables to their wonderful sauce and pasta...

The vegetables went into the parmigiano reggiano sauce with spaghetti

The shrimp went into the basilico sauce with cavatelli pasta

Enjoying the gift!

Thanksgiving Day at the Garbers'

Thanksgiving brought the scurry of family and friends and cooking. It was the kind of weather one always hopes for--mild and sunshiny. Becca's, our daughter-in-law, family joined us for the feast and brought the turkey and sweet potatoes. We missed our dear Elliott, Becca, and Lena, but one of the pictures shows us passing the laptop around for everyone to say hi to them on video chat (Well, really to try and get Lena to say our names) When evening came, our dear friends Kevin and David Offner came for dessert and the rousing end to the Redskins beating the Cowboys. We are so thankful to God for --well, pretty much everything!

Jonathan & Erika's Rehearsal Dinner

I doubt that I can improve on my daughter-in-law Becca's post about the rehearsal dinner for Jonathan and Erika at our house.  But here are a few more pictures and a little of my commentary about it.

Though we'd been preparing for the day for weeks, when Saturday finally arrived I woke up with butterflies in my stomach, wondering if we'd accomplish all that we needed to that day.  Another huge variable was the weather--Would it be pleasant or rain?

"The Pig" was the focal point of the dinner.  Steve and I put it on around 9:00 a.m. with some difficulty.  Note to self:  Do not start the coals before you put the pig on or you will burn yourself as you situate the pig.  The blister on my ring finger knuckle is just now healing!  But once it was on and situated it rotated throughout the day getting browner and browner, as you can see from these pictures at the end of the roasting, and smelling more and more delicious.

Jonathan plucks a juicy morsel after affixing the apple in its place with James,
a Gordon buddy, in the background.

The tables had been set since mid-afternoon, when a sudden burst of wind and cloud had us scurrying and preparing for the possibility of rain. But it turned out to be the entrance of the cold wave and blew away leaving sunshine and cool temps.  (Thank you, Lord!)

Help yourself to some cider-tea and munchies while mingling before we start.
Getting some of the 12 dozen biscuits I'd made into the serving dish with dear friends there solely to help--Gail and Clydette.

Ready to serve!  Come and get it!

Yes, it's really crazy that I don't have any good picture with Jonathan and Erika in it together or any of Erika alone!  That may change as I call in my resources.  In the meantime, all of this is getting further and further into the past, and Jonathan and Erika have been happily married now for six weeks.

My Wedding Artifacts (Jonathan & Erika's Wedding)

Here are some of my "wedding artifacts" from Jonathan and Erika's wedding.  Of course, the invitation was one of those first special things.  It was designed by Erika's brother Robert, and the ink blots are to allude to the writing of letters, which is how Jonathan and Erika's relationship was carried on when they first decided to date one another with more serious intentions than the previous five years of friendship had been.  Jonathan was going to Kenya for, he thought, at least nine months.  Thus they began dating by writing letters.

I never knew until I began shopping for a dress for the wedding that it is common knowledge (to some) that MOB means mother of the bride.  As far as I can tell, MOG is not used for mother of the groom because who would want to be called a "mog" anyway.  MOB is allowed to cover both, but it is well understood that the mother of the groom must take a back seat to the MOB, which doesn't disturb me in the least!  I discovered that Nordstrom has a tab devoted entirely to MOB dresses besides free shipping and free returns on everything all the time, so I immediately saw a way that I could shop for my dress without darkening the doorway of the dreaded MALL.   Of course, with the wedding on October 7, this shopping didn't begin until September, so there was no time to lose.  The first four dress choices were soon on my doorstep, quickly followed by the next three.  Opinions were entertained in person by daughter, husband, and good friend Judi and by texted photos to the other daughter.  (The groom preferred not to have to deal with this stress TOO!)  The choice narrowed unanimously to the sapphire tiers of shimmering taffeta overlapping to form the skirt of an elegant sheath dress. (It's sort of like houses--the description is always some degree or other better than the reality.)  The losing six dresses were quickly shipped back before any interest could gather on the visa bill.  I highly recommend this method of shopping!  The silver-gray heels from Elliott and Becca's wedding were happily pronounced sufficient.  I'm afraid I've long ago returned now the borrowed beaded clutch puse and oversized pearl and silvery jewelry, all borrowed from the aforesaid Judi.  Thank you, Judi!

My wrist corsage was much more beautiful than it appears here, but this was a few days after the wedding and after being squooshed by a carton of milk in the fridge.  But I still loved it even then.  Perhaps some future blog with actual wedding day pictures will do it more justice.

This is Eden's bridesmaid's bouquet in a vase of water with some mini pumpkins and a candle peeking out from underneath.  The flowers were really beautiful and such gorgeous natural fall colors and arrangements.

The favors at the reception were these handmade candy apples with the "postmark" of the wedding date and the bride & groom's initials.  They looked as lovely as they tasted.  Candles were everywhere, of course, but especially memorable were the wedding lanterns on each table.  Ours will always give us the happy memory of the wedding.  Thanks to Erika's folks, Bob and Patty, for making the wedding and reception beautiful, warm, and fun.
